Treating OCD: The essential elements

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex and highly debilitating illness marked by persistent unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can result in significant suffering. On average, it takes nearly nine years for those with OCD to receive a correct diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately, there is an effective, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based approach to treating OCD: exposure and response prevention (ERP). ERP is based on the principle of gradual in vivo or imaginal exposure to stimuli that evoke obsessional distress and the prevention of compulsive behavior.

...Read moreiate for masters-level clinicians, this program will provide a framework for conceptualization of patients and implementation of exposures which is research-based and best practice. Clinicians will be educated on what to do, and what not to do, when patients present with a variety of OCD-related symptoms. Different presentations will be discussed and normalized, including lesser seen OCD subtypes that might otherwise be difficult to conceptualize without this important context. The presentation will also include case vignettes and conclude with an opportunity for the audience to participate in a Q&A.

  • Identify features common to a diagnosis of OCD, regardless of the specific presentation.
  • Describe critical elements of exposure and ERP importantly related to the treatment of OCD.
  • Create best practice and research-informed interventions using ERP with patients.

  • Normalize both patient and clinician reactions to using ERP in service of providing treatment for patients.
