Reducing barriers to treating opioid use disorder

CE Hours 5

About this live event

Low-threshold buprenorphine treatment is a relatively new concept for treating opioid use disorder (OUD). More traditional treatment models often involve lengthy waiting periods, rigid protocols, and a focus on abstinence, which can create significant barriers for people seeking OUD treatment. By comparison, low-threshold buprenorphine treatment recognizes and addresses the specific challenges faced by people with OUD, particularly those who are from underserved and marginalized populations. There is growing research and evidence supporting its effectiveness and potential to improve patient engagement and retention in OUD treatment. This in-person seminar is for master's-level clinicians and community advocates who would like to gain a better understanding of the medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) paired with individually tailored interventions as a highly effective approach to treatment. Participants will learn about the evidence base behind MOUD and strategies for using Motivational Interviewing with patients who present with opioid use disorder. The presentation will also include case examples and interactive participation throughout the program to promote a deeper understanding and application of the material. Appropriate for beginner to intermediate-level practitioners.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the diagnostic criteria and epidemiology of opioid use disorder and name the three main medications approved to treat the disorder.
  • Summarize the spirit and tasks of motivational interviewing and identify two reasons that empowerment and engagement are important in opioid use treatment.
  • Name four characteristics of low-threshold treatment and state why buprenorphine lends itself well to this approach.
  • Describe how a client’s readiness and motivation for change leads to tailored skills and strategies in opioid use disorder treatment.
  • Explain at least two approaches for incorporating cultural sensitivity into motivational interviewing treatment for opioid use disorder.
